Drugs have been a problem in north Sheffield. Two groups were established by local activists to tackle the problem and help users and their relatives - the North Sheffield Drug and Alcohol Project (NSDAP) and Relatives of Drug Abusers (RODA). In this section, ex-users provide some insights into the effects of drugs. They reveal how they have gained strength and insight from their experience with drugs and how that has resulted in a commitment to doing the best for their families and a desire to help others fight against drugs. 'Making it Clean' is the name of a support group set up by NSDAP. It offers support to both current and ex-users and their families. Ellie has been attending the group over the last year and now helps out as a volunteer.

Using drugs has made me more clear headed - I understand why people do get themselves into things. And often when people get themselves into a mess with drugs, people don't believe that they want to come off, but I do have a lot of belief. Even if they have done a detox and they get back on, it's because it's so hard to get clean. But there is always a time when someone is gonna give it up and get their head sorted out. I did a talk about my drug use to a group of parents that children have children that are using drugs and I told them about my detox, just to give them a bit of more confidence in their children. They all started having tears in their eyes when they knew what I had gone through and what I've come through." Ellie Walker
