Getting married

During the uncertain times of war when couples were separated, many wanted to cement their relationships through marriage. Women still managed to have a white wedding despite rationing by borrowing clothes from friends and relatives. Under garments were commonly made from parachute silk. Over the years, the women have carefully preserved the mementoes and good luck charms seen in these pages from their special day.

Brian Bottom, aged nineteen, got six weeks leave from the army to get married to Sheila Elizabeth Dyson at Wadsley Bridge Parish Church in 1952.
