Steel Workers

For many of the families that first moved onto the estates in north Sheffield, the main breadwinner worked in the steel or engineering industries. The estates were designed as a dormitory suburb for these workers.

Dennis Mawson was a senior crucible furnace man at Daniel Doncasters in the 1930s. His job was to pull pots (crucibles) of molten steel out of the furnace which was below ground. Their tongs were about 8ft long.
