Working Life

Many families connected to the steel industry moved to the estates in north Sheffield. As a result, the sudden decline of Sheffield’s steel-manufacturing base in the late 1970s had a bad impact on life on the estates.

Whilst most men worked in the steel industry, women tended to work in local factories, offices or the service industry. During the war they did the jobs that men had left behind. From the late 1970s they often became the main breadwinner.

Here are some memories of Working Life.
