Unemployment

As a result of the collapse of Sheffield’s steel and related industries from the late 1970s, unemployment hit the north particularly badly. Male unemployment in the early 1980s was approaching double the average rate for the city as a whole.

The queue for the Post Office on Wordsworth Avenue became a common sight in the 1980s as up to half the population waited to collect their giros or pensions.
