Young lives

This vehicle was found abandoned in the northeast of Sheffield in November 2002. Every year, 50% of all the abandoned cars in Sheffield are found in this area. In the past, joy riding has been a means of self-expression for some of the local young people who transformed this car into a piece of art. They first helped to strip and spray the car and then used it as a 'blank canvas' to creatively express their views on aspects of life today. They chose to spray the car silver to represent Sheffield's industrial heritage.

The young people who made this artpiece, entitled Taken Without Owner's Consent, were involved with Nacro. Nacro is an independent voluntary organisation working to prevent crime. Nacro's vision is a safer society where everyone belongs, human rights are respected and preventing crime means tackling social exclusion and re-integrating those who offend.
